Focus on family friendly working

Yvonne Hardiman talks about how organisations can support work–life balance in the workplace, particularly in relation to families.

At various points in our lives, most of us will need additional support and understanding at work, and employers who recognise this will benefit by attracting a diverse workforce. The pandemic was a catalyst for organisations to embrace flexible working. Many employers found that employees in all sorts of roles could work remotely, when they had previously believed those jobs had to be carried out in the workplace. Employees with 26 weeks’ continuous employment have the right to request flexible working and employers must deal with the request reasonably. Flexible working requests can only be legally rejected for one of the eight reasons set out in law.
