How to become a dementia-friendly practice

Dental professionals have a duty to provide care and treatment to meet every patient’s needs, including those with dementia. Becoming a dementia-friendly practice requires a working understanding of dementia and how it is experienced by those living with it. A selected team member should be appointed to be the dementia champion for your practice. Other team members should take on the role of dementia friends: somebody who learns about dementia so that they can help their team. The starting point is for the team to research care requirements for patients with dementia. The team should be aware of the requirements of the Mental Capacity Act 2005 and have policies and procedures in place to ensure they can meet the practical requirements.
