Learning to lead: Developing your leadership skills

Leadership skills are a useful component of managing staff and influencing people. This article shows you how you can work on your leadership skills as a practice manager.

Great leaders have clear goals, so it is important to identify what your goals are – for both life and work. Good leaders have good communication skills – both speaking and listening. You can learn how to state your opinions and make your points clearly, concisely and with gravitas. Good listeners listen attentively and without judgement, noting the speaker’s tone, words, intention, body language and what they are not saying. Good leaders are assertive without being aggressive – they are assured and confident and able to put their point across to others clearly. Do not change who you are to become a leader – develop the skills you already have.
